For five of the courses running this year technology takes centre stage and the STEM Module becomes a mobile work shop bringing exciting technology and design based activities to schools around the province. These courses include:
INTRO TO PICS
This course offers pupils an introduction to PIC programming based around an electronic dice project which will help them to gain a good understanding of the basics of programming. The pupils will then be able to take the skills learned within this course use them in the development of their own PIC based projects as they continue their studies.
USING CNC ROUTERS
This course offers pupils an opportunity to see and use CNC routers to manufacture name plates and to engrave logos. This includes the initial computer based programming tasks as well as then having the routers produces the finished designs.
In addition to this it is also possible by prior arrangement to use the schools time slot to carry out project work using the CNC routers this would be beneficial to the pupils in relation to their GCSE and A level projects.
CAD CAM - LASER CUTTING
This course offers pupils the opportunity to use solid works to design earphone holders and use the design to produce them in acrylic with the aid of a CNC laser cutter.
In addition to this it is also possible by prior arrangement to use the schools time slot to carry out project work using the CNC lasers this would be beneficial to the pupils in relation to their GCSE and A level projects.
CAD CAM - 3D SCANNING
This course gives the pupils the opportunity to design a model car which will be modelled in plasticine and then reverse engineered using a laser scanner. A wooden replica of the model can be machined based on the scan of the pupil's plasticine model. This model is also suitable for producing a car for the F1schools bloodhound category.
This course includes various design activities based around Autodesk Alias sketch, Solid Works and 3D Scanning. The aim of this course is to give pupils the chance to experience various technical computer based design activities. This will help them develop skills they could use in their GSCE AND A level projects as well as in their continued studies.
Each course offers a different opportunity to experience something new and will help enhance pupil's knowledge and give them experiences of the skills and processes they will encounter during their studies in class.
